BioThey are deceitful little delights, laid out in neat, straight rows
Innocuous perhaps - but no.
For simple drops of ink, spilt onto a page
Lure us, hold us, stir us, reduce us
We are mere pawns in their quiet game.
Those static, silent lines
Outstretch their cool fingers, and gently brush
Those obscure, underfed vicinities that lurk within
Until then ignored, suddenly brought into the light.
And what a marvel, what a miracle!
That chains of letters can fulfill that which a fellow soul cannot.
And yet they gaze back unblinking, mocking
Their tiny black eyes do not shift, proudly marking the contrast:
You, defenseless, moved;
They, commanding, still.
And yet the thrill still flares
As our eyes meet reverently a white expanse
Immersed in these tiny wielded gems, these subtle rulers.
They are the most slippery of friends;
For they can rob you of power, or endow you with it
Depending upon which end of them you make your home.
